Undergraduate Program for the Major of Applied Psychology


.   Introduction

We began the enrollment of undergraduate students majoring in applied psychology in 2008. The students are awarded the bachelor of science degree with the completion of four-year full-time study. In 2009, we started the dual-degree program in applied psychology. In 2016, we started the master’s program in applied psychology. The experience and achievements of those years have promoted the building of “Double First-class” university and the construction of Marxism-Leninism discipline for Southwest Jiaotong University. In 2018, we began to provide online micro-courses in applied psychology supported by our university.

After nearly 20 years’ development, several significant platforms have been successfully built, such as the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Sichuan Province (psychological health education) established in 2008, the National Popularity Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences set up in 2009, the Sichuan Provincial Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences—the “Research Center for Mental Health Education” established in 2011, Sichuan Provincial Research and Training Base for Cadres’ Mental Health Education set up in 2012, and the National Popularity Base of Humanities and Social Sciences established in 2013. In 2015, the “National Demonstration Center for Mental Health Education and Counseling for College Students” was approved and initiated for further development and then the highlight major of Mental Health Education was developed, exerting an influence on and playing a demonstrative and leading role in national mental health education in universities.

.   Educational Objectives

This program implements the strategies of “Healthy China” and “Rejuvenating China through Transportation”, following the guiding principle of “strengthening the construction of social psychological service system, cultivating people’s mental health” and integrating the university’s specialty of “rail transport” with highlights of the major of “mental health education”. In accordance with the requirements of training innovative talents in values, personality, ability and knowledge, it cultivates talents for mental health services with “five couples of qualities”: social responsibility and sound personality, professional ethics and professional skills, humanistic spirit and scientific literacy, historical perspective and global vision, innovative spirit and critical thinking. Meanwhile, it enables students to understand the fundamental theories and concepts of psychology, equips them with professional knowledge and skills in counseling and psychological services, as well as in planning, building, and managing the mental health service system in the field of rail transit.
